We redid this unit from last year because it didn't go well and this is a tested area in 8th grade. We decided to do the same unit in Algebra as we do in Pre-Algebra. I made a few tweeks to make it a little more on Algebra level than just my Pre-Algebra. I have a few different ideas to do for next year and will post them as I do my pages next year, or at least that is my plan. OF course I need to fix the tab divider to add a missing lesson. |
Lesson 1: Vocabulary
With my Algebra classes, I had them pair up and google the vocab words and give their own definitions. When they finished, they were to complete a crossword puzzle using their definitions. This activity didn't go very well and I plan on changing it for next year with some ideas I have gotten over the past few weeks of searching. I will post next school year!
Lesson 2: Function Machine & Function Notation
I got this foldable from either Mrs. Hester's website or Math = Love. I can't remember, but I do know that I am changing it up next year. It has worked and served its purpose. I have found something else I want to try for next year and I'm excited to see how it works out for my students.
Lesson 3: Determining Functions
Back when I first started teaching 8th grade, I found that it was hard to find exactly what I wanted without creating it myself. I found this at one of my favorite blogs to read and it has worked. I again found something else I am going to try for next year. I teach this in Algebra before I do with Pre-Algebra and I will see how it works with them before I do it with Pre-Algebra. This one has so much writing for Pre-Algebra, that they can't hardly complete it without me pre-filling out the notes almost for them. We also did a card sort and glued them into our journal. This works really well. I have them sort first without gluing then I show them the correct answers and they correct if they need to, then glue them down. I also have them complete a very basic WS on the same thing. There is an IXL on this topic that is pretty good. | |
Lesson 4: Domain & Range
So, this is another lesson I don't really love and in previous searching I hadn't been able to find anything else that I liked better to replace this one until recently. I am going to do this lesson I found from Math = Love next year with my students for their journal.
Lesson 5: Linear vs. Nonlinear
Again, this is another lesson I don't "love". I found a new one I am going to do, but I can't remember where I found it. I thought it was from my usual places, but I couldn't find it. I'll post about it next school year!
Lesson 6: Similarities/Differences of Linear and Nonlinear Functions
I start this journal off by reminding them what a linear function is and we draw some generic examples on the front and do the same with non-linear functions. I have students get a partner and complete the inside of the tri-fold. Before we close up the lesson I go over the example on writing a function from a table of values. I think I might need to do an entire lesson this because we don't and they need to know how to do it besides plug and chug.
Lesson 7: How to Use Functions to Solve Problems
This lesson came from me retyping a lesson from a book we used back in the day when we first switched over to common core. It isn't great, but it covered the part of the standard. I think I am going to look for something different for next year.
Lesson 8: Using Graphs to Relate Two Quantities
This was a lesson I added at the end because there were questions on the test over this from last years unit (we didn't change the test). I can't remember if I found this or made this. I know it was FREE so it doesn't matter if I share it LOL!!
